By making words ‘strange’ (here, words in Spanish) a few things happen: you become conscious of how well your brain is trained to read (almost ‘feel’ your synapsis). But even better, is that the shape of a word can be seen in a new way. The shape of a word can be beautiful, especially when something forces you to see how beautiful letters are.

Al alterar la lectura y hacerla extraña, algunas cosas suceden: se toma consciencia de lo bien entrenado que esta nuestro cerebro para leer. Puede tomar un instante pero logra decodificar las palabras (casi se siente la sinapsis ahí dentro). Aunque mejor que eso, la figura de la palabra se ve de una nueva forma. La figura de una palabra puede ser hermosa, especialmente cuando algo nos hace ver que las letras también lo son.

I believe that, to reorder our ordinary perception of things is today, perhaps, the most important role of art and design.

Creo que, reordenar nuestra percepción cotidiana de las cosas es hoy un rol importante del arte y del diseño.

Reading is not a natural faculty. The Roman alphabet is one of the many systems—created about 2,600 years ago—which has had the most profound impact in our perception. Today, on keyboards and screens, writing and reading is yet another social convention that we are forced to asume without questioning. We do not notice that letters are a medium, and as such, they have created the environment in which we live, even our institutions and our ‘worlds’ (McLuhan). However, since they are a man made medium they can be altered at any time.

La lectura no es una facultad natural. El alfabeto romano es uno de muchos sistemas de escritura —creado hace unos 2,600 años— que ha tenido un profundo impacto en nuestra realidad. Hoy en teclados y en pantallas, la escritura y la lectura no son más que otra convención social que estamos forzados a asumir sin cuestionar. No notamos que el alfabeto es un medio y que, como tal, ha creado el ambiente en que vivimos, nuestras instituciones y nuestros ‘mundos’ (McLuhan). Sin embargo, al ser un medio creado por la raza humana, puede ser alterado en cualquier momento.
